Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation, Cambridge, MA I was invited to attend the Ash Institute's Inaugural Workshop. Speakers included Professors Lani Guinier, Jane Mansbridge, Robert Putnam, Stephen Goldsmith (past mayor of Indianapolis) and Dean Joseph S. Nye, Jr., repectively. We had lively discussions on how to strengthen democracy amidst diversity (defining "representation"), how can grassroots democracy be enhanced (examples of high and low citizen participation in different towns and possible factors; role of technology) and what are the constraints and opportunities around innovation and change in our government.
I came away energized and thinking-how could we boost citizen & voter engagement in South Hadley? What about an educational, Citizen Mobile or Kiosk to remind residents to vote on Election day and to share updates about community news in the town?? If you have any ideas, please email me!
Walking the Talk: A Renewed Commitment to Education, Environment and Community - 15th Reunion, SFS Kenya Program Members of the School for Field Studies (Northwestern University), Class of 1989, and their families gathered out west in Yellowstone National Park to celebrate their 15th anniversary, sharing Kenya memories, home-cooked meals, career news (book publications!), grad school updates and new little family members.
Beyond the impressive academic credentials (two-thirds now holding Master's degrees and one-third have Ph.D's), these individuals stand out in their dedication, passion and commitment to making the world a better place to live. Through different pathways, from teaching environmental/outdoor educational programs to researching sustainable development in Latin America, from starting a local school for children with learning disabilities to directing global public health research, this is truly an inspiring group of individuals MAKING A DIFFERENCE!
Plans for a 20th reunion in Kenya, possibly as a part of the SFS field curriculum, are being explored...
